Clean Drinking Water Now - Rally at ECan

Join us at a rally outside ECan and make your voice heard as we call for clean drinking water now!

At the last council meeting before the election, we are bringing the issue of Nitrate contamination in drinking water directly to Environment Canterbury so that it can't be ignored.

We will hear from guest speakers - freshwater experts, and members of our community who are impacted by nitrate contamination.

Bring a jar of your drinking water with you.

* If you know the nitrate level in your water, write it on the jar.

Canterbury is a hotspot for the freshwater crisis. Many people can’t drink the water coming out of their kitchen tap or go swimming in the local river without getting sick.

But the Government is removing freshwater protections to make it easier for intensive dairying to expand. And, there are plans to allow more than 16,000 dairy cows to be added to the Canterbury plains.

This means more dirty rivers and aquifers, and a higher risk of polluted drinking water.

In Canterbury, we’re calling on candidates for Environment Canterbury to protect freshwater by committing to:

  • Stop the expansion of dairy farms
  • Establish a sinking cap on the use of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser
