Ban Seabed Mining! No fast track for TTR! Toitū te Tiriti!

Join us to fight the government’s fast-track bill, Toitū te Tiriti and stop highly destructive seabed mining in the South Taranaki Bight; to support Ngati Ruanui in protecting their coastlines, their fishing grounds.

We will be outside the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) hearings on seabed mining in Hawera - at the TSB Hub. The EPA will be considering whether seabed miners Trans Tasman Resources can meet the Supreme Court's test of causing no "material harm" to the Bight.

We will join mana whenua Ngāti Ruanui outside the hearing, at 8.30am. Come early, stay for the morning, the day, or indeed for all three days.

Background
In 2017 the EPA gave Trans Tasman Resources consent to dig up 50 million tonnes of the seabed every year for over 30 years, dumping 45 million tonnes back onto the seafloor.

The Bight is home to pygmy blue whales, kororā, Maui and Hector's dolphins.

We fought that consent in the High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court, and they all quashed the consent. The Supreme Court sent it back to the EPA to see if TTR could meet a very strong test: that it won't cause material harm.

Now after more than ten years of fighting off destructive seabed mining, it appears the government may include this project in its new "fast track" legislation to get around the environmental tests. This would undermine Te Tiriti, as well as the government's own legislation.
